Gerald Santos Takes the Top OPM Song in my 2021 FABE OPM Top 10 Year-End

Gerald Santos gets the #1 spot in the year-end countdown of my FABE OPM Top 10 countdown.  It is the theme song to last year's MMFF entry 'Isa Pang Bahaghari' starring Nora Aunor and Philip Salvador.

It has been sometime that a soundtrack song has topped the year-end countdown. It's the first time Gerald tops the OPM year-end countdown and this is also his first #1 song in the countdown.

It's another male-dominated year as well, with seven of the ten songs coming from male acts.  Juris is the highest female charting act for this year, a feat she has done several times in the past.

Here are my ten favorite OPM songs for the year 2021 -

#1 Hanggang Sa Muli           Gerald Santos

Tony's Movie Review: Spielberg Gives West Side Story the Right Freshness for Today's Young Audience While Pleasing Its Older Fans

When I read months ago that the revered film director Steven Spielberg was updating The West Side Story - I admit I was scared for him LOL.  That musical is perfect in almost every sense - every note - every song, the storyline, the choreography - it would be crazy to update it because the movie musical purists would never forgive him if he butchers the movie.

Thankfully, Spielberg is a genius and except maybe for one or two things, he gives the updated movie the right amount of fresh star power for today's generation and pleasing older fans like me who knows the movie by heart.

I still remember the first time I saw Rita Moreno sing 'America' and the goosebumps I felt!  I don't know how Spielberg could possibly top that scene!  And he doesn't lol. I guess I still love the original.

However, even if Spielberg updates parts of the movie, strangely, there is a subliminal message he is sending which kinda makes me worried.

Coming from a country where intermarriage between races is not looked down upon or even much of an issue to most families - there are parts of the dialogue that kinda reinforces that one should not overstep one's group in society.  Or maybe I am just over thinking.  I just hope today's young audience does not get the same vibe that I got.

Otherwise, bravo to everyone in the movie.  Some of the cast will end up in my year-end list for my personal awards as they truly give uplifting performances.

Which brings me to Ansel Elgort.  He used to be one of my man crushes - and still is after watching him in this movie.  But I don't think I'd cast him again if the role requires a bit of nuanced emotional acting lol.  I could feel everyone else's troubled emotional turmoil but his just doesn't register well onscreen.  Maybe Steven should've picked someone from the theater world.  That's all.

Movie Review: 'The Unforgivable' is Quite a Heavy Drama with a Surprising Twist

Sandra Bullock is perpetually scowl-faced in her new Netflix movie 'The Unforgivable', making me wonder if there are really people in this world with such a joyless existence that nothing ever makes them smile.

There is a tragic back story to her character and when the movie was helping us piece through the flashbacks, a question was nagging at the back of my mind.  Why would a relatively sane person like Sandra Bullock's character do that deed when she knows the grave consequences it will bring to her sister and she?

Midway through the movie, my question is answered by a twist - and it was only then that I understood most of the motivations of her character and why she seemed so hard, so unhappy, so unforgivable?

There were parts of the movie that I enjoyed, especially Bullock's parole officer - a bright spot in drearily-themed movie.  Revenge is also a recurring theme in the movie which gives the movie a heavy atmosphere from start to finish.

I think it's only my being a Sandra Bullock fan that has made me enjoy this movie - and eagerly watching how it ends.  I desperately wanted a happy ending to the tragedy that permeates every pore of this movie.

MOVIE REVIEW: 'Passing' Can Strike A Chord to Everyone Who Has Pretend Who They Are Not

I was intrigued that one of my favorite actresses, Rebecca Hall, directed this movie, 'Passing'.  This is because part of her personal life hewed closely to what the characters in the movie were experiencing.

I would not want to give too much of what the movie is all about but the title alone should give you a hint.

Well, I love Ruth Negga in this movie. She hides a lot of pain and fear behind her jolly exterior, while Tessa Thompson just does the right amount of restraint in navigating a world where the color of her skin provokes such strong reactions from people. Andre Holland, who plays her husband, also gives a good performance, showing Tessa's character, the reality of being black and what their sons have to deal with once they go to the real world.

Other strong points for me is the editing of the movie and the original score, both contributing to the heightening tension as the movie progresses.  Even though it was in black and white, I love the cinematography of the movie as well as costume design.  1920s fashion, with the hats and the laces and the frills is really quite feminine and fun.

Overall, the movie struck a chord in me because I know exactly what Ruth Negga's character was feeling. Passing can also happen in the gay world, when gay men have to pass for straight men, especially when they are placed in uncomfortable circumstances.

I will just write another essay on that topic since that will involve a lot of soul-searching on my part and how society has changed in the past 25 years in the way they treat gay people.

I strongly recommend you watch the movie to find out how other people live, especially those who dangerously navigate in forbidden areas.  Apparently, some survive, like Rebecca Hall's relation, some fail, like what Ruth Negga's character suffers in the movie.

MOVIE REVIEW: 'The Power of the Dog' Shows the Toxicity of Hiding One's True Sexuality

I have never thought of Benedict Cumberbatch as someone sexy, but after watching Jane Campion's 'The Power of the Dog', I have definitely changed my mind.

He does strip off naked in this movie, but since I was watching it with Mama (!!!!! que horror), I could not really check out if his peter made an appearance similar to the 'dick' scenes a bit like what Neil Patrick Harris and Ben Affleck did in 'Gone Girl' - you have to have an eagle eye to see THEIR ding dongs - well just for fun anyway.

But man, he's really sexy in this movie, very lean stomach, very hard muscles, and that scowl which he wears in the entire movie, makes him look not only quite sexy - but poised to get another nomination for a Best Actor Oscar.  He should be up there in the top 5.

I won't mention much about the story since I do not want to spoil anything.  The trailer kasi is also very vague so I will just leave it to the viewers to find out the movie's secrets.

What I can say is that all the four major actors are superb. The buzz around Kirsten Dunst winning her first Oscar (for Best Supporting Actress) is quite well-deserved.

For me, Kodi-Smit McPhee and Jessie Plemons are quite outstanding and hopefully both can get Oscar noms.  They contribute so much to the tension and the unraveling of the story.

I won't be surprised if they get Oscar noms for Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actress, Supporting Actor, Original Music, Cinematography, Adapted Screenplay and Costume Design.  I think those are where the film performs strongly.

The movie is set in Montana and the mountain and plain scenes are quite striking and are all photographed beautifully.  The music also contributes a lot in creating the movie's tension and mystery.  It actually guides the viewer if that scene has something important to say.

This movie is not for everyone.  However, if you are a cineaste, you should not miss it.

MOVIE REVIEW: 'Spencer' Shows Princess Diana Suffering in a Suffocating World of Stuffy Royalty

I am currently watching the TV series The Crown right now and I am in Season 4, almost at the right time when the setting of this movie 'Spencer' is.

It is only now that I am beginning to see the full picture of the Prince Charles - Princess Diana romance and to find out that it was almost all just make believe, and that it would be hard put to find which parts of their marriage was true love and which was just forced love - like what many of the other earlier British monarchs had to endure.

Spencer shows a part of the story where Diana suffers another round of snooty, rude, and snobbish behavior from the royal household during a certain Christmas season.

In the movie, she looks like the poor outsider but her trump card is that she is the mother of two sons who are going to be the next kings of the kingdom.

The movie steps between the world of what's real and what's surreal - and I guess the director and writer used this approach to emphasize what Diana was feeling and experiencing at this crucial moment of her marriage.

It was like seeing a woman clutching at straws, trying to find a way for her to survive her drowning in a sea of apathetic people.  This was the view the public did not much see, as we only knew what the palace then wanted us to see - including all the antics Diana had to do to keep her sanity.

Kristen Stewart is superb as Lady Diana.  She encapsulates what the princess might have felt and was defiantly fighting against during that time in her life.

The make-up, the fashion, and the art design, I think all of those things are the movies strong points and I won't be surprised if they snag an Oscar nomination in any of those.

Outstanding also is the original score which mirrors the turmoil of Diana.  The cinematography is cool as well, bathing the movie in a patina of brightness, allowing the grandeur of things be seen easily - as any Diana movie is also a movie about what she wore and of course, the grandeur of British royalty.

This movie though is not for everyone even if you are a Diana fan.  It is brooding and has its euphoric moments as well as gloomy moments.

I was so miffed already towards the end of the movie as I can feel how the noose was slightly tightening around Diana's neck when a really joyful ending with Mike and the Mechanic's 'All I Need is a Miracle' serving as the rousing song gives the movie a happy ending.
