Tony's Movie Review: Marriage Story Shows How Ugly Divorce Is

It was difficult for me to watch Noah Baumbach's 'Marriage Story' because there's a lot of fighting going on and watching smart, talented, and opinionated people tear each other down to pieces just breaks my heart, especially that the two leads are also two of my most favorite Hollywood actors now - Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson.

This movie has several beautifully acted scenes, that thanks to it being shown at Netflix, I do get the chance to rewind each scene and watch it again, and again and again.  Top on my list is when Adam Driver sings "Being Alive".  That scene alone speaks volumes about how this guy can really act!  To think, I just discovered him in the Girls HBO series - and he was so lovely there - being naked and fucking almost in every episode!

I also love the Laura Dern scene where she says "God is the father, and God didn't show up. You will always be held to a different, higher standard." She just chews the scene and owns it!  I also love Ray Liotta and Alan Alda as the lawyers of Adam Driver's character.  I just hate Ray and love Alan and both are terrific in their roles!

Finally, that scene where Adam tells Scarlett that he wishes her to die, just brought tears to my eyes.  How can two people who used to love each other, really go so low? (Big sad sigh)

The music by Randy Newman is non-intrusive but very effective.  I love the way it sets the mood for the scenes - going from melancholy to perky - from LA to NY - it's like changing the hues of the movie and using music to heighten the tension.

I am not surprised about all the praise the movie is getting.  It is a brutal look of a disintegrating marriage but it is so full of heart you end up wishing the best for both parties as they continue with their lives.
