With due respect to Taron Egerton and Awkwafina who are relative newbies to the biz, the other acting Golden Globe winners today in the film category have given us memorable performances in the past, and except for Renee, all of them, have yet to win an acting Oscar.
I remember the first time I saw Brad Pitt, in the feminist movie, 'Thelma and Louise' where he seduced the already Oscar winner then, Geena Davis. "Who is THAT guy?" was the big question I was asking as I left the theater.
In 1991, we had no Google and you'd have to stay for the screen credits to appear to know the 'unknown' actors. I remember, even Bette Midler was raving over 'THAT guy' in the movie.
Laura Dern was David Lynch's muse in two of his movies 'Blue Velvet' and 'Wild at Heart' and I remember, you couldn't watch those movies in the theater because they were banned - instead, you had to watch them in betamax, especially Blue Velvet!
Renee would always be Jerry Maguire's girlfriend for me. I am sure just like many gay men my age, she was our princess, our Bridget Jones, the ever supportive woman behind the back of every ambitious man.
As for Joaquin Phoenix, I can never shake him off as the evil emperor who had Russell Crowe, the Gladiator, executed. Later, he was memorable as the geek who falls in love with a Siri-like AI, in 'Her'. He is a master chameleon!
All of them are already shoo-ins for an Oscar nomination in their respective categories, I just hope none of them gets an 'Olivia Colman' on Oscar night lol
